Kelly Motorhome & RV Blue Books and Other Pricing Tools

A Kelly Blue Book, on the surface, seems to be the logical way to determine a fair price your motorhome or RV. RV Blue Books, however, can mislead you. PPL believes pricing a diesel, motorhome, 5th wheel or travel trailer should primarily be based on actual selling price data. Click on the topics below for more information.

Price Guides

The following is noted about motor home and recreational vehicle price guides as contrasted to automobile price guides:

• Price guides for automobiles are developed by collecting a vast amount of actual used car sales data and then analyzing the data to provide NADA and Kelley book values.
• On the other hand, prices in the guides for used RVs are mostly determined by taking a percentage of the original manufacturers suggested retail price and are not very accurate.  If you are not very careful, many options will be double counted because they are already included in the original manufacturers suggested retail. PPL does not recommend relying only on book values.

This means price guides may not help you determine an accurate asking price for your RV.  Also, many options are included in the original manufacturers suggested retail price so it is difficult to know which, if any, options should be added.  This makes using price guides difficult.

Kelley Price Guides not available online. However, you may purchase  these guides from PPL (Please be aware that these guides are likely to be inaccurate).  The prices below are for a single recent issue and not for an annual subscription.

Compare with Prices of Other Recreational Vehicles Advertised for Sale

You may want to compare your vehicle with similar vehicles for sale on the internet. Searching through online advertising for comparable vehicles can is one way of doing this. For your convenience, sites that advertise a large number of  used vehicles are listed below. Again, keep in mind that advertised prices may be considerably above or below the fair market value.

Factors to Consider in Pricing Your Unit

A number of factors affect the value of your recreational vehicle. These primarily include:

• Overall condition: Does it have any water leaks, discoloration, dents or other structural imperfections? Has it been well maintained? 
• Mileage: If it is a motorized vehicle, is the mileage average and does it run as expected? 
• Accessories:  such as awnings, satellite dishes, solar panels, automatic leveling, etc.  Keep in mind many of these items are included in pricing guides.
